What Is Marijuana?

A famous member of the Cannabis family, Marijuana refers to the leaves, flowers, stems and seeds from either the sativa or indica plant.

With high concentrations of Tetrahydrocannabinol, it contains around 15 – 40% THC depending on the strain. Due to a high THC content and the psychoactive nature of it, Marijuana is deemed illegal in most countries around the world. This opposes to its cousin, Hemp, which only holds 0.2% THC and is legal.

Marijuana has been named the most commonly illicit drug and has found to be widely spread amongst young people.

How Do People Use Marijuana?

There are multiple ways to consume Marijuana. Whether it be smoking the buds in a hand-rolled cigarette or through a pipe, there is not one fixed way to use it. Vaporising has become popular, with some using a liquid Marijuana extract.

People have also been known to mix the leaf into their food, baking brownies or cookies and even brewing it as a tea.

When Marijuana is ingested, the THC element will pass into the bloodstream. Eating or drinking a form of Marijuana will be absorbed slowly into the body and will generally be felt after 30 – 60 minutes. When Marijuana is passed through the digestive system, it will result in the creation of 11-Hydroxy-Metabolite in the liver which is 4 – 5 times stronger than THC.

The Legalities

Marijuana has been classed as the most commonly abused illegal substance worldwide.

In the U.K, Cannabis is a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Scheduling Act 2001 which means it is illegal to be in possession, sell or use it. In November 2018, the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid introduced specialised legislation to allow residents to access cannabis, from a professional, for medical reasons.

Recreational Marijuana is legal in Canada, some States in America, Mexico, Jamaica, Uruguay and more. Every place has their own laws on regulations, amounts allowed to be carried and usage.

What Is Medical Marijuana?

Medical Marijuana is a synthetic form of the substance. It can come in capsule forms and can be used for treating poor appetite, nausea and vomiting. Other ways to take it are through inhaling, eating it, applying it topically or sublingually under the tongue.

Can You Overdose On Marijuana?

An overdose occurs when a person takes enough of a drug to produce life-threatening symptoms or death.

Despite users of Marijuana feeling side effects, there have never been any reports of death from it alone.
